“Getting It” is straight-ahead power pop that combines 80s keyboards with loud, snotty guitars. It was the first song we wrote together, and showed us the way in re: our approach to the album (i.e., seemingly anodyne lyrics that are in fact about politics). But the H.L. Mencken quote that comprises the outro is really what establishes the album’s theme.

There’s a lot that could be said about the baseless, undirected anger so many people expressed to justify voting for maybe the worst person in America; not to mention the surprise among not a few Trump voters that, wait, this could *hurt* people? even people I love? even *me*? really? well how was I supposed to know?

However, the shortest version is probably the best: the 2016 election demonstrated who we truly are. And that’s what this song, and album, are about.
